Calico cat names

Calico cats are almost always female, because the white, orange and black combination needs two X chromosomes. The word comes from a printed cotton named after Calicut in India.

In Japan calicos are considered lucky, and the beckoning maneki-neko figure is traditionally a calico. Tama, the calico who served as station master at Kishi Station, was famous enough to be honoured after her death. Closer to home, calicos suit patchwork names (Patches, Quilt, Confetti) and painters (Monet, Frida, Pollock).
